STONES - Jan Marmenout
During one of his travels in the centre of France, Jan discovered in an old
volcanic region a special kind of stone, called 'phonolyth'. The stone is known for it's
clear ringing sound when strucked with another stone or a metallic object. Jan took some
samples home and started to experiment with their sound.
Two months later he returned to the region and spend several days to search for
good sounding stones and to select them by tone and pitch.
He started to play this unique set of 'clinckstones' on his concerts, thus exploring their richness in overtones and fascinating rhythmic possibilities. Finally he went to the studio to record a collection of amazing improvisations, all in one take without any dubs. It became a fascinating trip into the ancient world of sound of probably one of the first musical instruments on this planet. Tracklist:
