SPIRITS - vidnaObmana & Jan Marmenout
Both Belgian musicians, with roots in different musical worlds, share a passion for the unique quality of sound. With devotion for the richness of one particular instrument, Vidna Obmana’s field of expertise in electronically amplified and processed acoustics and synthesized structures blend nicely with Jan Marmenout’s unique talent in performing on a vast array of exotic instruments.
Commissioned by the Belgian label Highgate, Vidna Obmana and Jan Marmenout created a fascinating collection of music. Spontaneous and real-time they recorded a collaborative project with the supportive help of producer Ivan Candaele to a degree, which fine-tunes the combination of both artists’ vision and composing. With just a handful of pre-recorded sources, both musicians transposed their ability to perform live in concert to the studio, interacting improvisational, but with a strong sense of composition, together, capturing the magic of live exchange on tape.
The album is at times a very powerful statement, spiritually primitive and tribal while beautifully melting with the profound and contemporary, simultaneously an accurate product of modern philosophy and ancestral experiences.
